Regular Cotton vs Organic Cotton — And Why Both Beat Synthetic Fibres for Sleep

When you're choosing what to sleep in, the fabric matters more than most people think. You spend a third of your life in bed — that's a long time to be wrapped in something that isn't working with your body.
Here's an honest breakdown of the three most common fabric categories in sleepwear: conventional cotton, organic cotton, and synthetic fibres.
Conventional Cotton: Better Than You Might Think
Conventional cotton gets a mixed reputation in sustainability circles, but it's worth being fair about what it actually is. It's a natural fibre — breathable, soft, moisture-wicking, and biodegradable. For sleepwear, it's genuinely hard to beat from a comfort standpoint.
The real issues with conventional cotton are largely invisible to the wearer:
Pesticide use — conventional cotton farming is one of the most pesticide-intensive forms of agriculture in the world. Those chemicals don't typically end up in your finished garment, but they do affect farmworkers, soil, and surrounding ecosystems.
Water consumption — cotton is a thirsty crop. Conventional farming rarely uses the water-efficient practices increasingly adopted in organic production.
Chemical finishing — the dyeing and finishing processes for conventional cotton often involve chemicals not permitted in certified organic production.
For the person sleeping in it: conventional cotton is comfortable and safe. The impact is further up the supply chain.
Organic Cotton: The Same Comfort, Better Story
Organic cotton is grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers, on land that has been managed organically for at least three years. The fibre itself is chemically identical to conventional cotton — same breathability, same softness, same feel against skin.
The difference is what happened before it reached you:
Healthier farming — organic cotton farming supports soil biodiversity, reduces toxic runoff, and protects the health of farmworkers.
Lower chemical load across the supply chain — when paired with certified processing, organic cotton moves through dyeing and finishing without the harsh chemicals common in conventional production.
Same breathability and softness — organic cotton breathes beautifully, wicks moisture, and gets softer with washing, just like conventional cotton.
For sleepwear specifically, organic cotton is an easy upgrade: same comfort, meaningfully better impact.
Synthetic Fibres: What They Don't Tell You
Polyester, nylon, acrylic — synthetics are everywhere in fashion and homeware because they're cheap to produce, wrinkle-resistant, and easy to care for. But for sleepwear, they have real drawbacks worth understanding.
They trap heat — synthetic fibres are not breathable the way natural fibres are. They don't wick moisture effectively, which means sweat sits on your skin rather than being drawn away. For anyone who runs warm at night, this is significant.
They generate microplastics — every wash cycle releases microplastic particles into the water supply. This is one of the less visible but more serious environmental concerns around synthetic textiles.
They're made from fossil fuels — polyester is derived from petroleum. It is not biodegradable, and its production is carbon-intensive.
Skin sensitivity — some people find synthetic fabrics irritating over long periods of wear, particularly for nightwear worn close to the skin for hours at a time.
There are contexts where synthetics make sense — performance sportswear, waterproof layers, specialist technical gear. Sleepwear is not one of them.
The Bottom Line
Natural fibres — cotton in all its forms — breathe, soften with time, and biodegrade. That puts them in a different category entirely from synthetics, regardless of certification. The choice between conventional and organic cotton is a values question, not a comfort one.
At AMOKA DALO, we use organic cotton because we believe comfort and conscience don't have to be separate decisions. But we'd rather explain the differences than just tell you ours is better.
