What is Regular Cotton?
Conventional cotton is one of the most chemically intensive crops in the world. Although it covers only 2.5% of the world's agricultural land, it accounts for 16% of global insecticide use. To grow conventional cotton, farmers use pesticides, synthetic fertilisers, and enormous amounts of water.
By the time it becomes fabric, conventional cotton has typically been treated with:
- Chlorine bleach
- Formaldehyde (to prevent wrinkling)
- Synthetic dyes containing heavy metals
- Optical brighteners
These chemicals don't always wash out completely — meaning they sit against your skin all night, every night.
But here's something worth saying clearly: even conventional 100% cotton is a better choice than synthetic fibres. Polyester, nylon, and other synthetic fabrics are derived from petrochemicals, are not biodegradable, and release microplastics into waterways with every wash. Cotton — in any form — is natural, breathable, and biodegradable. The question is simply how responsibly it was grown and processed.

What is Organic Cotton?
Organic cotton is grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers, using farming methods that maintain soil health and biodiversity. It uses significantly less water than conventional cotton and avoids the most harmful agricultural chemicals.
However — not all "organic cotton" is equal. The term alone has no legal protection. A brand can label something "organic" without any independent verification of how it was grown, processed, or manufactured. This is where certifications become essential.
What is GOTS Certification?
GOTS stands for Global Organic Textile Standard — the world's leading certification for organic fibres, covering the entire supply chain from farm to finished fabric.
To carry the GOTS label, a textile must meet strict criteria at every stage:
- 95%+ certified organic fibres (for the full GOTS label)
- No toxic dyes or bleaches — only low-impact, non-toxic dyes permitted
- Safe wastewater treatment at all processing facilities
- Fair labour standards — safe working conditions, fair wages, no child labour
- Full traceability — every step independently audited and certified

Other Certifications Worth Knowing
GOTS is the most comprehensive standard, but it's not the only legitimate certification in the industry. Here's a quick guide to others you may see on labels:
OEKO-TEX Standard 100 — one of the most widely recognised certifications in textiles. It tests the finished fabric for harmful substances including dyes, heavy metals, and chemical residues. It doesn't certify that the cotton was grown organically, but it does guarantee that the final fabric contains no harmful chemicals — a strong assurance for anyone with sensitive skin.
OCS (Organic Content Standard) — verifies that a product contains a stated percentage of certified organic material. It covers the raw material but not the full processing chain, so it's less comprehensive than GOTS. Still a legitimate and independently verified claim.
Fairtrade Cotton — focuses on fair wages and safe working conditions for cotton farmers rather than organic farming methods. Often combined with organic certification for a more complete picture of ethical sourcing.
Better Cotton Initiative (BCI) — not an organic certification, but a programme that promotes more sustainable conventional cotton farming practices — reducing water use, pesticide dependency, and improving farmer livelihoods.
Bluesign — focuses on responsible manufacturing and chemical safety throughout the dyeing and finishing process. Strong on the processing side, complementary to organic fibre certifications.
When you see any of these labels, it means an independent third party has verified that specific claim — which is always more meaningful than a brand simply calling itself "sustainable."
